From Kathryn to Cait

Have You Ever Just Wanted to be More?

Cait Perez was born the middle child, only daughter; Kathryn Spears to Verle and Betty Spears in the winter of 1962. This has been the foundation for her life. Stuck in the middle between two boys makes  a girl-child invisible.

Her love of books came early in her life; exposed to all the adventures of the past and present and speculative futures through the books her mother painstakingly purchased through her life. Kathryn loved to organize, catalog and otherwise stay involved in the acquisition and enjoyment of books. She learned about exotic places, adventure, suspense, horror and even love through the pages of paperback books.

She has enjoyed reading since her older brother taught her to read at five years old. There were no books that were too boring or mundane to open and peruse. This behavior created the woman who now  not only loves to read, but loves to write.

She has tried writing in many different genres of stories but found that she was lacking the desire to complete the many books she started. That is, until she found that she loved a good historic romance book. Action, adventure, intrigue, and a bit of love all rolled into a full story that could put her and her readers into another place. Kathryn loves warriors, especially those with hearts as big as forever.

Her biggest obstacle is not in writing the books, but in how others would view her for what she put in the books. Her sense of propriety needed to be overcome to truly write what she wanted. She has overcome this obstacle, somewhat.

History stands out as one of Kathryn's loves. She also learned to appreciate Scotland, the rugged beauty, the old-world memories etched in the dilapidated castles, the spirits that float near burns and lochs, whispering to those who would listen.

Recently she started thinking that maybe she was born in the wrong place, but more so, the wrong time. The stories she reads about 12th through 17th century Scotland and England have her intrigued, and she feels her heart being tugged toward that time and place.

Her life has been a road traveled under the guise of complacency and obedience. From parents who expected it, to the military that commanded it, and to corporate America who required it. There is no time in her life when she found herself; always being that which others thought she should be. She is lost in her own time while seeking that which she is. Kathryn found that making waves makes conflict. She does not like conflict, so she conforms, she stays invisible.

The choices one makes are usually those that guide your future. Kathryn is no different. Necessity guided her to writing. She writes to earn money to suppliment her meager salary as an adjunct college professor--her expertise: Psychology. The economic status of her household dictates that she write, or find other venues to supplement the small income she acquires doing that which she does love--teaching.

Her background includes menial labor, babysitting, the United States Marine Corps, Corporate jobs, non-profit jobs and now independent contract jobs. No matter what, Kathryn finds a way to persevere and she shows in her stories that same spirit in her characters, and what they have overcome to find love.

Today Kathryn Perez is seeking out her own personal and unique identity as Cait Perez - Author.
